Grief Goes to Schools Our Center has conducted several grief support groups (8 to10 week sessions) in a variety of schools in Orleans, Jefferson and St. Charles parishes. They have included elementary, middle and high schools. These groups are co-facilitated by a Bridges Through Grief staff therapist (LPC or BCSW) and the school social worker. Due to the number of children affected by loss in the schools, the limited time and resources of each school social worker, the school support groups have been very effective and successful resources for these grieving children. At the end of the program the school social worker feels better equipped with experience and tools to provide future grief groups as needed. Teachers, counselors, social workers and families refer children to the group. The social worker and the child’s teacher conduct evaluation of the effectiveness of the group. The main objectives are to create a safe place for the children to express their feelings about the losses. Reported success of these school groups has been documented by the social worker in improved grades, lowered absenteeism, lower suspension rates and improved behavior in the classroom with less acting out and outbursts of anger.
